Throughout the history of the film industry, there have been many successful and extraordinary film directors who have executed the films people continue to enjoy watching today. In this blog post, I will discuss the story behind one of America’s well-known film directors, Steven Spielberg.

Steven Spielberg’s Early Life and Career-

Steven Spielberg was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on December 18, 1946. His father, Arnold Spielberg, was an electrical engineer in the computer department, while his mother, Leah Frances Posner, was a concert pianist and restaurateur. Throughout his teenage years, he filmed a few award-winning movies, such as Escape to Nowhere, Firelight, and Amblin. After attending California State College in Long Beach, California, he pursued his film-making interests at California State University. Apart from making other films, he directed episodes from many TV series, such as Columbo.

After his award-winning film Amblin, Spielberg became the youngest director to sign a long-lasting contract with Hollywood. He founded Amblin Environment and joined Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen to form Dreamwork SKG. He was the chairman of the Starbright Foundation, which established a combined industry of pediatric healthcare, technology, and films to bring happiness and bravery to ill children. Over the years, he has continued to produce various films and grow companies within the filming industry, as he sometimes inputs some of the personal challenges he has faced in these films.

What were his well-known films and why were they successful? –

One of Spielberg’s most successful films is 1982’s E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. This film was successful due to Spielberg’s magnificent mixture of fantasy and realism through a heartwarming story. The human characters’ bond and personalities reflected the reality of family problems and relationships, allowing the audience to understand and connect with the film. For this period, the film’s memorable visual effects and soundtrack allowed it to create a believable world through fiction. The film’s opening weekend box office reached $11 million, winning several awards.

Spielberg’s second successful film is 1993’s Jurassic Park. This film gained popularity through Spielberg’s incorporation and combination of CGI and animatronics, introducing the filming industry to modern technology. Its use of visual and sound effects brought the dinosaurs to life, giving the audience excitement and feelings of suspense. These practices of modern cinema led the film to win 20 awards, including an Oscar for Best Visual Effects. The ongoing growth of the audience during this period gave this film $50 million in the first opening weekend at the box office, marking it the highest-grossing film of its time. It also included making pre-release licensing contracts with over 100 companies and its successful merchandising of toys and more.

A third successful film of Spielberg’s time is 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. This film was prosperous due to its continuous franchise of returning the central role of Harrison Ford. The fanbase enjoyed the movie because of the same thrill they had hoped for from the action sequences and challenges the characters faced. The opening weekend box office for this film was $100 million, with the additional nominations and winning awards.
