In this blog post, I will discuss the valuable aspects of the editing process, including all of the different technical elements involved that draw the audience’s attention.

The Individual Elements of the Production and Editing Process of Movies

How are movies filmed in the production process? –

To begin the filming process, the production team has to consider what classification the film should be categorized as. Movies are divided into three groups: realism, classical, and formalism. Once the category is chosen, including the scene and location where it needs to be filmed, the cameraperson follows the director’s guidance to capture the perfect shot and angle. The three most significant shots to consider while filming are a close-up shot, a full shot, and an over-the-shoulder shot. In the filming industry, the priority of the production team is to make sure the film connects with the audience through every scene. For this reason, four central angles are used to film the scenes: eye level, high angle, low angle, and oblique angle. Camera shots and angles allow the audience to connect with the sentimental value portrayed by the actors and actresses and understand the message behind the film.

What are the essential technical elements of filming? – 

During the filming process, four parts must be carefully considered and organized: lighting, color, sound, and editing. These elements have a significant role in gathering and representing the message behind the screen to influence and interest the public. 

 The uses of light and color in the film production-

While filming certain scenes, whether outside or on a set inside a building, the production team agrees to establish a specific lighting style. Some styles may range from high and low-key lighting to chiaroscuro and black lighting. High-key lighting reduces the contrast between the dark and bright sections of the scene, while low-key lighting creates a more significant contrast between them. Chiaroscuro lighting blends the light and dark elements to create darker backgrounds. Unlike other lighting styles, black lighting only focuses on using light behind the actor or actress to create a more profound mood. A variety of lighting techniques are used to display and represent the specific mood or emotion that is reflected in the acting taking place. 

Color techniques are used in film production to depict a certain tone in a specific scene. It is suggested that when filming, it’s better to film the scene as raw footage to create a strong image of details and quality of the scene. Two color techniques that are consistently used are saturated and desaturated. A saturated color scheme depicts the theme of love and optimism, while a desaturated color scheme depicts misery. 

The sound production of a movie-

In sound production, there are two highly significant forms of sound: diegetic and non-diegetic. Diegetic sounds are visibly seen on purpose to demonstrate the focus of the acting. The diegetic sounds are emphasized throughout the dialogue, with various sounds and music accompaniment to understand what the production team wants to portray in the film. Non-diegetic sounds are edited in the post-production process, which must be more easily understood and seen in the movie. For these types of sounds, sound effects and narrations help set the main elements of the film that only the audience would understand, for the actors and actresses were unaware of them. 

The editing process of filming –

Editing films is an overlooked process. Gathering all of the scenes together to finalize the film and release it to the public eye takes excellent consideration. The editors work hard to make any changes that allow the film to flow smoothly without errors or misconceptions. A couple of editing techniques, such as classical and radical subjective continuity, successfully address the flow of the mood, tone, and other characteristics of the film.
